Cubing History; How the Rubik’s Cube Was Invented

The Rubiks Cube; One of the most popular toy and puzzle in history, has a fascinating history. In fact, it took the man who invented it, Erno Rubik over a month to solve his own creation. This article is about the fascinating history behind the Magic Cube?

Yes, that’s right, the Rubiks Cube was originally called the “Magic Cube.” In the year of 1974, a young inventor named Erno Rubik had come up with an idea. In an attempt to teach his students more about design and engineering, he created what later would become the best-selling toy of all time. The first Rubiks Cube consisted of wooden blocks held together by glue, tape, paper clips, and rubber bands. He called it the “Bűvös kockav,” or in English; the Magic Cube.

In 1980, the cube hit the shelves and immediately caught on.

After just one year on the shelves, the Rubik’s Cube had over 100 million sales. And it only went up from there.

The Rubiks Cube was first sold via a company called “Ideal Toy Corp” by two businessmen named Tibor Laczi and Tom Kremer. The name was changed from Magic Cube to Rubiks Cube. Now in 2021, the Rubiks Cube has over 450 million global sales, making it the best-selling toy of all time.
