Rubik’s cube art has gained popularity over the last few years, you may have seen some mosaic-like images made with hundreds and hundreds of Rubik’s cubes. While some of these are quite a feat and take months of planning and thousands of dollars to make, creating your own Rubik’s Cube art is relatively simple and can be done with a few free tools and under 100 bucks. This article goes over the best software, cubes, and other tips you can use to make your first-ever Rubik’s Cube masterpiece.
The Cubes
When it comes to choosing the cubes you want to use, there are quite a few options. The cheapest is the GAN Mosaic bundle which has a 6×6 and 10×10 pack of 3cm cubes that are modular so you can buy multiple and expand them. This product is the most efficient way to make mosaics because it comes with a base plate that the cubes can magnetically snap on too. If you want to use bigger cubes, or make larger mosaics like wall mosaics, use any cheap 3×3 you can find at any online cube store. My personal favorite cube for mosaics is the Mofang JiaoShi MF3RS 3×3 which is only $3.95 per cube. When you decide how many cubes you are going to get, then you can make a bracket from wood frames based on your dimensions. For simple images, anywhere from 8×8 to 12×12 should be enough. But if you want more detailed images like portraits, use something over 20×15.
Getting an Image
When looking for an image to pixelate, keep the number of cubes you have in mind. If you have less than a 10×10 grid of cubes, then go for a simple image with little detail. If you have much more – like 25×25 or larger – then go for a more detailed image like a person’s face, or a landscape. You can use this great tool called Mosaic Generator from bestsiteever.ru which lets you upload an image, choose the size based on how many cubes you have, and choose a color scheme you like. It’s optimized for portraits but can also be used for any image. When you are satisfied with the generation, you can download a PDF which you can refer to while making your mosaic.
Cool Examples
