The Rubik’s Cube is already a hard-enough puzzle to solve. However, it doesn’t stop at just the 3×3, because there are many other puzzles that are exponentially harder to solve that you may never even have heard of. Some of these puzzles have never even been solved by anyone! Keep reading to find out what’s the hardest Rubik’s Cube of all time.
Zettaminx
If you were expecting WCA puzzles… then you might be a little overwhelmed. The Zettaminx is the largest mass-produced megaminx variant and is sold by ShengShou. Imagine a 13x13x13 Rubik’s cube. Now imagine it has 12 sides. Yeah, that’s the ShengShou Zettaminx. It has over 2500 individual pieces and costs over $800. Although it isn’t the most popular puzzle in cubing stores, most of its reviews actually claim that it turns quite nicely and doesn’t catch very often. If you’re looking for a highly challenging puzzle that will take you over 10 hours to solve, then this might just be the ideal puzzle for you. But wait, that’s not all, this is not the highest order megamix of all time, that award goes to the Minx of Madness made by the YouTuber Corenpuzzle who also holds the former record with the Atlasminx. The Minx of Madness has a width of pieces and has over 5000 moving parts. It was completely 3D printed and is truly spectacular to watch turn.
Puppet Cube
While this puzzle doesn’t seem as daunting as the previous one on this list, the Puppet Cube is one of the most difficult puzzles to solve without a guide. From one side it may look like a normal 2×2, but it actually shapeshifts, and there are actually inner pieces that can rotate on the outside and inside of the cube. This means that even if you somehow solve all the outer pieces, the inner pieces may not be solved. Solving this puzzle requires a different approach than solving normal NxN puzzles because of 2 reasons. The first is that it has an uneven amount of pieces which means that some sides have more pieces than others, and the second reason is that due to the fact that the puzzle shapeshifts, there are some turns that cannot be done since the pieces are being blocked by other ones. Jperm has a great video where he tries to solve it without any help. That video showcases just how difficult the puzzle is as he mentions that it was the hardest puzzle he’s ever solved.
If you want to solve this puzzle but are looking for an easier version to get started with, the Puppet Cube II may be suitable for you. Contrary to its naming, the version 2 is actually easier than its predecessor. This is because the inner pieces are actually movable and can be solved independently of the outer pieces with commutators and such.
Ghost Cube

The final cube on this list is the ghost cube, the ghost cube is a shapeshifting puzzle that is made of many different pieces of various shapes and sizes. It has some large pieces and some extremely small ones. What makes this cube especially difficult, is that the way this puzzle shapeshifts can be highly disorienting and hard to follow when trying to solve. Furthermore, not many people have even solved this puzzle so very few tutorials exist. Most likely, if you are going to attempt to solve this cube, you will have to figure out your own method or try to decrypt an obscure tutorial. If you’re looking for a good tutorial, I found that this one does the best job of explaining how to solve this puzzle the best.
These puzzles bring a whole new dimension to the world of cubing. How many of these puzzles did you know about? Let me know in the comments if you know of any harder puzzles and I may add them to this list.
